Mother Leaves Piece of Heart with Son at College, Now on Transplant Waiting List

Lansing, MI (August 25, 2023) – Moments after departing Michigan State University’s Gilchrist Hall, 49 year-old Mindy Oliver let her social media following that not only did she leave her son there but also a piece of her heart.  Unfortunately for the New York-based mother, she did not realize that a human needs a heart in its entirety in order to live a long, healthy life.  As a result, Oliver was medevacked home and is currently on life support at NYU Langone Medical center awaiting a donor.

Like many parents, Oliver took to Facebook and Instagram to document moving her son, Jake, into his dorm a few days before classes begin at MSU. Not enough to just post a few before and after pictures, the overly protective parent went one step further to prove how fantastic a mother she is by also adding that she “is leaving a piece of my heart at MSU” followed by a crying emoji.  In addition to a family photo book she hastily put together on Shutterfly, Oliver left her aortic valve with her son and his roommate, Rajesh Shaikh.

“We’ve seen a tremendous uptick in voluntary heart failures since the rise of social media,” noted Chief of Cardiology at Columbia Presbyterian, Dr. Warren Shapiro. “It’s amazing how many people don’t understand the fundamentals of the human anatomy. The heart is pretty important.”

The aortic valve opens when blood flows out of the left ventricle to the aorta which, in turn, carries oxygen-rich blood to the body.  It is almost inconceivable to think that Oliver did not realize that it was an important thing to keep.  Doctors have suggested that in lieu of leaving a piece of the heart with a child who is away, it would be prudent to gift a child a necklace with a half of a heart charm or if a mother really wants to prove her love, leave them a pinky toe in a small glass jar.
